While many residents experience flooding during instances where storm sewers can’t keep up with an extraordinary amount of rain that falls in a short time, sanitary sewer backups and overflows occur when stormwater runoff infiltrates the sanitary sewer system and causes parts of the system to exceed the sewer pipes’ capacity.
