The Wheaton Police Department is committed to providing victims and witnesses with appropriate services and related resources. The Department believes that victims and witnesses should be treated with fairness and respect, echoing the tenets written in the "Bill of Rights for Victims and Witnesses of Violent Crime Act" (Illinois Compiled Statutes 725 ILCS 120/1 - 120/9). This law guarantees basic rights to crime victims and witnesses. Additionally, victims and witnesses are afforded certain rights under the “The Violent Crime Witness Protection Act” (Illinois Compiled Statutes 725 ILCS 173/5 -173/99). The Violent Crime Witness Protection Act was designed to protect victims and witnesses and potentially provide financial support for those who are actively aiding in the prosecution of perpetrators of violent crime.
If you need additional assistance in navigating this process, the City of Wheaton has two full-time social workers available to provide support and connect you with resources. Please see the Social Services Main Page.
