- Safe Haven for Newborn Babies
Wheaton's Fire Stations and Police Station serve as "safe places" under the Illinois Safe Haven law, meaning Illinois parents can anonymously relinquish their newborn infant to the care and custody of a safe haven within 30 days of the baby's birth. The law was created to protect newborn babies from abandonment and provide immunity from prosecution for parents who relinquish their unharmed newborn to a safe haven.
After a newborn infant is relinquished to a fire station or police station, the baby will be transported to the nearest hospital for a health exam and medical treatment, if needed, and will proceed through the adoption process. The process is completely anonymous.
For more information, see the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation or read the full Illinois Safe Haven law.
