Wheaton Time Capsules

Time Capsules in Wheaton, IL

Please note that this research is a work in progress. If you know of additional time capsule sites, send an email to wheatonhistoriccommission@gmail.com. The City of Wheaton Historic Commission has identified the following time capsules associated with Wheaton:

1. City of Wheaton Time Capsule

303 W Wesley Street

Buried in 1959, relocated in 1992, opened in 2009.
New time capsule: Buried in 2009; Reopen Date: 2059

The City of Wheaton time capsule installed in 1959 was unearthed and opened in May 2009 (newspaper stated June 2009) and is to be reopened in 2059 for the city bicentennial. It is in front of City Hall under a marked boulder.

Originally, it was buried at the old police station site along Wheaton Avenue. It was unearthed when the building was demolished in 1992 and reburied at the current police station site along Liberty Drive. Then, in 2009, a new time capsule was created and buried in front of City Hall, 303 W Wesley Street.

122 N Wheaton Avenue

Reopen date: 7/1/2033

3. Adams Park Time Capsule: Wheaton Chamber of Commerce

Adams Park, Wesley & Main Streets

Buried Sept. 26, 2002; Reopen date: 2052

The Wheaton DBA Chamber of Commerce was buried in Adams Park underneath the Adams fence monument on September 26, 2002; to be opened in 2052

4. Longfellow School Time Capsule 

311 Seminary Avenue

Buried in 1930s; Discovered in 2001

The Longfellow School time capsule was found and opened during remodeling in September 2001

5. Old DuPage County Courthouse Time Capsule

200 Reber Street

Buried in 1896; Opened April 5, 2007

6. College Church Time Capsule

332 E Seminary Avenue

Buried 1992; Reopen date: 2042

The College Church time capsule was installed in 1992; it is to be opened in 2042.

7.      DuPage County Historical Society Millennium Time Capsule

102 E Wesley Street

The DuPage County Historical Society Millennium time capsule was installed in the year 2000 at 102 E. Wesley Street and will be reopened in 2050. The DuPage County Historical Society chose artifacts for a time capsule in the Fall of 1999 and donated the capsule to the DuPage County Historical Museum in 2000. The Museum will not display the capsule’s contents until 2050.

8.     DuPage County Girl Scouts’ Time Capsule

102 E. Wesley Street

The DuPage County Girl Scouts’ time capsule was installed in 2011 at 102 E. Wesley Street and will be reopened in 2061. In conjunction with the 2011-2012 exhibit, Girl Scouts Our Promise: Then, Now and Forever, the DuPage County Historical Museum collected memories, photos, and letters from DuPage County’s Girl Scouts for inclusion in a time capsule. The Museum will not display the capsule’s contents until 2061.
