[ARCHIVED] Winter Weather Update: Dec. 23

Winter Weather update

Public Works crews worked overnight to continuously clear roads and spread pretreated salt on City streets. All streets have been plowed, however drifting snow from heavy winds has created a thin layer of packed snow in many areas.

Today crews will continue scraping any loose snow, pushing back drifts and salting roads. Below-zero temperatures will prevent salt from properly melting snow, so we expect some snow to remain on many roads.

The National Weather Service’s Winter Storm Warning continues through 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, with expected wind gusts up to 50 mph and wind chills of -30 to -40 degrees. If you must travel today, please use caution, keep extra distance between your vehicle and others, and give plows room to do their job.

City Offices Open

City offices are open today for anyone who needs to conduct City business. However, there are a number of services that can be completed online, including submitting bill payments, requesting City services, and filing a police report.

Library Closed

The Wheaton Public Library is closed today and will be closed for the holiday weekend, reopening on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Prevent Freezing Pipes

To help prevent freezing pipes, you can open cabinet doors under sinks to allow heat to get to pipes and let a faucet drip at a trickle if possible. You can find other Cold Weather Emergency tips on the City’s website.

Warming Centers

If you need a warming center, please refer to this list of all locations throughout DuPage County, or call 2-1-1.
