WHEATON, Ill. – Wheaton Mayor Michael Gresk helped kick off a celebration of an exciting time in downtown Wheaton, as the City begins construction on Front Street. Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony today on Front Street’s Martin Memorial Plaza to mark the beginning of Front Street upgrades from West Street to Cross Street.

Joining Mayor Gresk were Wheaton City Council members Michael Barbier, Suzanne Fitch, John Prendiville, John Rutledge, Todd Scalzo and Phil Suess. Also scooping up dirt with ceremonial gold shovels were Wheaton City Manager Michael Dzugan, Jon Brooke of Design Workshop, Downtown Wheaton Association President Donna Hesik, and Rob Deming of Primera Engineering.

Over the next 4 years, the City of Wheaton will update and improve underground utilities, roadways, lighting and signage, while creating wider, more pedestrian-friendly sidewalks. New gathering spaces will be created, and the Martin Memorial Plaza will be relocated to the north side of Front Street and will contain a new water feature and an outdoor fireplace.

Mayor GreskThis part of the project is anticipated to be completed by early fall. See the City’s website or follow Wheaton on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date with this project.
