Insert your favorite “cops eating doughnuts” joke here; we don’t mind. This Friday, Aug. 19, 2022, members of the Wheaton Police Department will happily surround themselves with this cliché breakfast favorite for a good cause, and they will even get up on the roof to draw attention during 'Cop on a Rooftop.' From 5 a.m. to noon, members of Wheaton Metropolitan Association of Police (MAP) #699 will be volunteering their time at the Dunkin’ at 956 E. Roosevelt Road in Wheaton to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois. The law enforcement community continues to help these tremendous athletes achieve their dreams.
“Yes, we’re police officers, and yes, we will be enjoying some doughnuts,” said Community Engagement Officer Crystal Miroballi. “This is a fun annual event where we enjoy the chance to interact with our community while raising funds for Special Olympics Illinois programs. Each year, the Wheaton community continues to amaze us with their generous support, so it’s an uplifting event for our department.”
The union’s goal is to surpass last year’s fundraising total of $6,000. Any donations made at the event benefit Special Olympics Illinois, and each guest who donates will receive a coupon for a free donut. Law Enforcement Torch Run T-shirts, mugs and hats will also be for sale. This is the 19th year law enforcement agencies across Illinois have partnered with Dunkin’ for this event. Anyone who’s interested can also donate online, making sure to type “Wheaton Police Department” in the box that asks which law enforcement agency should the donation be credited.
This is just one of the ways the Wheaton Police Department and MAP #699 assist Special Olympics Illinois. The annual Polar Plunge held earlier this year in Wheaton and the Law Enforcement Torch Run in Chicago also support local Special Olympics programs.
