[ARCHIVED] Halloween Pumpkin Collection Event

Pumpkins

The City of Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission will once again host a “Pumpkin Smash” drop-off for pumpkins. This collection will allow you to drop off pumpkins (please remove decorations first) to be composted, rather than going to the landfill. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon in the commuter parking lot at Liberty and Carlton.

Why Keep Pumpkins Out of the Landfill?

  • Decomposing organics make landfills the third largest producers of methane
  • Composting returns nutrients and water back to the soil; pumpkins are nutrient-rich!
  • Pumpkins are 90% water: good for our soil, bad for our landfills
  • Most of the pumpkins processed in the U.S. are grown in Illinois; keep the water and nutrients here!

Due to COVID-19, all participating residents are required to wear a mask and maintain social distancing at the event.
