The City of Wheaton received clearance from structural engineers on Jan. 16 that will allow the City to reopen a portion of the downtown Wheaton Metra station at 402 W Front Street by the end of January.

Damage from a fire in the station Nov. 22 has kept the facility closed to this point. The City leases the building from the Union Pacific Railroad and has been working with insurance representatives and structural engineers to determine the extent of damage and ensure the building’s safety.

Once crews can complete the cleaning of the facility to make it safe for use, the City will reopen the majority of the train station’s waiting area. The City expects this work to be complete by the end of January. Temporary walls are in place to section off the remaining damaged area of the station, and the City has brought in temporary heating and electricity for the station. When the station is reopened, restrooms will not be immediately available, but crews will work to reopen them as soon as possible.

The City appreciates your patience and apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused.
