The City of Wheaton prohibits residents from general open burning of yard waste, garbage, or other materials including leaves.
Recreational and food-related fires conducted within commercial and approved containers such as grills and manufactured portable fireplaces are allowed, provided it is being used within safe and reasonable clearance from any building, structure or vehicle. Only seasoned firewood or equal is allowed to be burned in manufactured portable fireplaces or permit approved fire pits. If attempting small ground bonfires, residents must first attain a special permit from the Fire Department.
With an increased level of spring cleanup occurring within the community the City encourages residents served by Lakeshore Recycling to utilize the yard waste pick-up service. Residents can use containers no larger than 35 in size and/or biodegradable paper bags that weigh no more than 50 pounds that have the appropriate yard waste/organics/garbage sticker attached.
