At approximately 11:15 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2020 the Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1300 block of East Elm Street. Upon arrival, fire crews identified a fully involved detached garage fire.

The fire was brought under control within minutes. The single-family residence was occupied at the time of the fire, and all occupants escaped safely. The incident did not result in any injuries. The fire caused extensive damage to the garage structure and minor damage to the adjoining residence, along with several vehicles.

Investigators from the Wheaton Fire Department conducted a fire investigation. The cause of the fire is deemed accidental and appears to be related to a recreational outdoor fire. Damage estimates are unavailable at this time.

The City of Wheaton Building Department was called to the scene. The Wheaton Fire Department was also assisted on the scene by the Wheaton Police Department and several fire departments from neighboring communities. The building was turned back over to the property owner after the fire.
