At approximately 1:00 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2019, the Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Woodlawn Street. Upon arrival, fire crews identified heavy fire in the rear of a single-family residence with fire extending to the second floor. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes.
The sole occupant of the residence was inside the home at the time of the fire and was alerted by smoke detectors. The occupant safely escaped and sustained a minor injury. The occupant was treated on the scene and then transported to a local hospital for follow-up.
The fire caused extensive damage to the structure and it was deemed uninhabitable.
Investigators from the Wheaton Fire Department along with the DuPage Fire Investigation Taskforce conducted a fire investigation. The exact cause of the fire is deemed undetermined at this time, but it does not appear to be suspicious in nature. Damage estimates are unavailable at this time.
The City of Wheaton Building Department was called to the scene. The Wheaton Fire Department was also assisted on the scene by the Wheaton Police Department and several fire departments from neighboring communities. The building was turned back over to the property owner after the fire.
