Second Phase of Downtown Streetscape Project Completed

Wesley Street, Hale Street and Cross Street in downtown Wheaton are open for all to use, featuring numerous improvements just in time for holiday shopping and dining. The City of Wheaton recently completed Phase 2 of its extensive Downtown Streetscape Project, which is improving infrastructure both underground and aboveground.

Phase 2 improvements included Hale Street from Willow Avenue to Union Avenue; Wesley Street from Cross to Wheaton Avenue; and Cross Street from Front Street to Wesley Street. In Phase 1, crews completed underground and above-ground improvements to Front Street from West Street to Cross Street.

Christmas Festival Weekends Happening in Downtown Wheaton

The Downtown Wheaton Association is sponsoring holiday activities including carriage rides through the downtown, cookie decorating, roaming entertainment and more from noon to 3 p.m. each Saturday through Dec. 21. This Saturday will also include ice carving demonstrations. See the Downtown Wheaton Association’s website for details.

Road Closures for Reindeer Run

The Wheaton Lions Club and Wheaton Park District 5K Reindeer Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Some streets will be temporarily closed for this event. To see a list and map of the streets that will be closed, please visit the City’s website.

Library Hosting Holiday Concert on Sunday

Celebrate the holidays with the Wheaton Park District chorale group Beyond Glee as they perform a concert at Wheaton Public Library this Sunday at 2 p.m. This performance-based mixed adult community chorus sings a wide repertoire of songs and will have you singing along to your favorite holiday songs. No registration is required to attend this event.

Last Week for Leaf/Yard Waste Pickup

The week of Dec. 9 will be Lakeshore’s final pickup for yard waste and leaves. Pickups will be on your regular garbage day. Each biodegradable bag/container must have a sticker in order to be picked up. For more information, visit the City’s website.

City Seeks Feedback on Proposed Building Code Amendments

The City of Wheaton is in the process of updating building codes to the 2018 editions of the International Code Council, Inc (ICC) and will be adopting local amendments of those building codes appropriate for the City of Wheaton. Adoption of the most recent ICC building code editions with local amendments promotes the health, safety, and welfare of our community.

City Staff is recommending adoption of the 2018 ICC initiated changes, which are summarized on the City’s website. The City is looking for feedback on the proposed amendments from the community by Friday, Dec. 13. All comments should be emailed to Fire Chief Bill Schultz at bschultz@wheaton.il.us or delivered to Wheaton City Hall: 303 W. Wesley Street, Wheaton, IL 60187.

Gingerbread House Contest is Dec. 14

Wheaton Public Library will host a Gingerbread House Contest on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. in the library’s Arts & Culture Center on the main floor. No registration is required to enter the contest, but participants must drop off their edible creations between noon and 1 p.m. on the day of the contest.

Prizes will be awarded for the following categories: Children (up through 5th grade), Teen (6th-12th grade), Adult (18+), and People’s Choice (voted by program attendees). Group entries are allowed, but each group or individual may enter only one house per category. Entries must be decorated primarily by a person of the age in the category in which they are entered.
