Opportunities to Serve on City Commissions

Are you looking for an opportunity to get involved and give back to your community? Several of the City’s commissions are seeking volunteers to join their group. These include:

  • Community Relations Commission
  • Environmental Improvement Commission
  • Fine & Cultural Arts Commission
  • Group Care Home Commission
  • Historic Commission
  • Housing Commission
  • Sister City Commission

These groups meet on a regular basis and review specialized matters with the intent of developing recommendations to the City Council. You can read about each commission on the City’s website, and fill out an application to serve on a commission.

City Budget Workshop Recordings Available

Last week, the City Council completed two workshops to review the proposed 2020 City budget. The 2020 City of Wheaton Draft Annual Budget is available on the City's website. You can view recordings of the workshops on the City's website:

Christmas Parade

Save the Date for the Living Wheaton Christmas Parade

A time-honored tradition, on Friday, Nov. 29, Wheaton will celebrate the coming of Christmas with a hometown parade organized by the Downtown Wheaton Association. Stick around until the end because some special and jolly pays his first visit to Wheaton! The parade will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 at City Hall near Karlskoga and Wheaton Avenue, continuing south on Wheaton Avenue. It will turn east (left) onto Front Street, concluding at Cross Street.

Temporary Road Closures for Emerson Turkey Trot 5K

Please note that on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019, some streets will be temporarily closed from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for the Emerson Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk. See the temporary street closures on the City’s website.

No Garbage Pickup Nov. 28

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, Lakeshore Recycling Systems will not pickup up garbage, yard waste or recycling on Thursday, Nov. 28. Thursday and Friday routes will be picked up one day later during that week.

City Offices Closed

City of Wheaton offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29. Offices will reopen on Monday, Dec. 2.

Wheaton Community Christmas Tree Lighting

Join the festivities of a new tradition in Wheaton. The official City of Wheaton Christmas Tree is moving to City Hall this year and is a tree that we can watch grow from year to year. A tree-lighting ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, in front of Wheaton City Hall, 303 W Wesley Street.

Video Highlights Wheaton’s Role in the Underground Railroad

Wheaton’s Bicycle Advisory Commission held a bike tour highlighting important places in Wheaton related to the Underground Railroad. Hear from author Glennette Tilley Turner, who spoke at the bike tour, about Wheaton’s history and the Underground Railroad.


Leaf & Yard Waste Pickup Reminders

Lakeshore Recycling Systems will continue to pick up leaves and yard waste through the week of Dec. 9. You must place a Lakeshore Recycling Systems sticker on each bag or yard waste/tree trimming stack. Stacks must no longer than 4 feet and no more than 18 inches in diameter. You do not need to bundle stacks with twine.
