Thanks for Making Bike Wheaton Festival a Success 

Thank you to the community for taking part in the 5th annual Bike Wheaton Festival this past weekend, and a special thanks to the Wheaton Bicycle Advisory Commission and Downtown Wheaton Association for organizing the event. Check out this video with some of the highlights from the event.  

Road Closure: 2019 St. Michael Parish Picnic Aug. 17

Willow Avenue will be closed to all motor vehicle traffic from West Street to Wheaton Avenue from approximately 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. During this time motorists may wish to choose an alternative route to avoid delays. Wheaton Police Officers will monitor the area during this event. 

Applications Received for West District Council Seat 

On Aug. 6, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. the City of Wheaton closed the application process for the vacant West District City Council seat. Applications were received from the following 10 individuals: Nancy Harding, Edward Ahern, Jeffrey Antonelli, Robert McNeily, Lynn Robbins, Mark Kmiecik, Angela Blatner, David Diersen, Khizar Jafri, and Krista Selvey. The City Council will review the applications received over the next several days and make a recommendation for appointment to the vacant seat. Please direct any questions to the City Clerk, Sharon Barrett-Hagen at 630-260-2012.

Citizens Fire Academy

Join the Citizens Fire Academy 

Have ever wondered what it takes to become a firefighter? The Wheaton Fire Department invites you to participate in a hands-on learning experience that will have you gearing up in fire equipment and learning what the life of a Wheaton firefighter is really like. 

The Citizens Fire Academy is a 7-week course offered exclusively to Wheaton residents ages 18 and older. The academy runs from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 17 through Oct. 29. The program covers everything from day-to-day fire station operations, breathing apparatus, vehicle extrication, and much more. Register at www.wheaton.il.us/fireacademy, or call 630-260-2175 and provide your name, address, and phone number. 

Library Book Sale Coming Soon 

More than 20,000 books will be for sale at the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale Aug. 21-25 at the Wheaton Public Library, 225 N Cross Street. Fiction for every reading taste, nonfiction on every popular topic, paperbacks and hardbacks will all be available at bargain prices. A separate area of the sale features children’s books. All proceeds benefit library programs.  

The sale is open:  

  • 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 and Thursday, Aug. 22  
  • 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 and Saturday, Aug. 24.

Wheaton Police Talk about ALICE Training and How It Could Help Protect You 

The Wheaton Police Department has adopted the ALICE Training model to teach citizens tools they could use if faced with a violent intruder situation. Watch this new video to find out how this method is different from previous approaches and what you can take away from ALICE training. 

Two Classic Car Shows Remain This Season

Catch the last two Vintage Rides Car Shows before the season ends. The Downtown Wheaton Association hosts this weekly summer event from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 16 and Aug. 23 on Front Street in downtown Wheaton, where visitors can check out vintage and custom cars; enjoy a live DJ and more. This is a free, family-friendly event, and there is a different theme featured each week. See the Downtown Wheaton Association's website for details

Police Taking Part in Saturation Saturday 

On Aug. 24, the Wheaton Police Department will be participating in Saturation Saturday enforcement with a focus on drunk driving and drug & alcohol-related traffic offenses. The Wheaton Police Department will join state, county, and local law enforcement agencies across the state for increased enforcement during the evening and late-night hours. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Illinois spearheads these statewide efforts to raise awareness on the dangers of drunk and drugged driving, and increase enforcement to remove and arrest individuals driving under the influence. 

Library Seeks Presenters for Maker Day 

Wheaton Public Library is seeking presenters to participate in its second annual Maker Day, to be held at the library Saturday, October 19. The library is accepting applications from individuals, organizations, and businesses that wish to present at this event. Maker Day presentations for all ages may include, but are not limited to: technology, robotics, LEDs, arts and crafts, sewing, ceramics, and woodworking. These presentations may be watch and learn, hands-on, and/or make it-take it. Applications can be found at wheatonlibrary.org/content/seeking-steam-presenters. The deadline to submit an application is Aug. 31.
