Wheaton Fire Department Hosting Sept. 11 Ceremony

The Wheaton Fire Department will host its annual Sept. 11 Commemoration Ceremony in the front of the Wheaton Fire Department, 1 Fapp Circle, at precisely 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The community is invited to attend.

Holiday Schedule for Garbage Pickup This Week

Due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, all pickups this week will be one day later than usual.

City Seeks Police Officer Applicants

The Wheaton Police Department is recruiting entry-level police officers. Orientation and testing will be held on Oct. 21. See this video giving you a look at what it’s like to be a Wheaton police officer. You can learn more about the application process on the City’s website at www.wheaton.il.us/jobs. Applications are due by Sept. 28.
 


Public Meeting for East Roosevelt Road Study

Looking to improve the quality and character of development along east Roosevelt Road extending from Carlton Avenue on the west to the City’s eastern boundary with the Village of Glen Ellyn, the City of Wheaton is currently working with the Planning Consulting firm of Camiros, Ltd. to prepare a comprehensive plan, market study and zoning ordinance update for this corridor. As part of this process, the City invites property owners and residents to attend an existing conditions workshop hosted by the Planning & Zoning Board at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Council Chambers of Wheaton City Hall, 303 W Wesley Street. For more information, see the City’s website.

 


Car Burglaries at Wheaton Parks

The Wheaton Police Department has taken several reports of burglaries to motor vehicles in the past 2 weeks at Northside Park and Rathje Park. In these instances, the vehicles' windows were shattered and valuables removed from the unattended vehicles. The Wheaton Police Department is investigating these burglaries. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is encouraged to contact Lieutenant Bill Cooley at 630-260-2077. 
 
If you are parking your vehicle in/near a park, the Wheaton Police Department reminds you to:

  • Park vehicles in a conspicuous/public location. 
  • Roll up windows and secure vehicles. 
  • Avoid leaving valuables visible in vehicles. 
  • Call 9-1-1 to report suspicious persons and behaviors.  



Library Card Sign-up Month

Wheaton Public Library is celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month with the Incredibles! Pick up a brochure in the library or Wheaton Chamber of Commerce office for a list of local businesses that will offer a discount or gift for presenting your WPL card. Visit the library and go on a scavenger hunt to find Incredibles characters throughout the building for your chance to win a prize! All new library card sign-ups in September will have a chance to win a prize, and ALL ages can get a card. Stop by the Circulation Desk for details.

Garbage Day Changing for Wednesday Routes

Residents served by Lakeshore Recycling Systems and whose regular pickup day for garbage, recycling and yard waste is on Wednesday will soon have a new garbage day. Lakeshore is redistributing its Wednesday routes to increase efficiency for its pickups.
Lakeshore will be placing notices on the garbage/recycling carts for all Wednesday routes notifying these residents when their new pickup day will be. An updated garbage day map will also be available soon on the City’s website.

Festival of Cultures

Festival Shines Light on Diverse Cultures Sept. 16

Wheaton’s Community Relations Commission encourages you to mark your calendar for a celebration of diverse cultures in the community. From 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, the Festival of Cultures will fill Memorial Park, 208 W Union, with music, displays of heritage, personal stories, food trucks and more.

This all-ages event is free to attend. Pick up a program and passport at the entrance, then travel the world by visiting the 25 groups featured at booths, where they will share their heritage and stories. Two local bands will perform, and visitors can enjoy food from three food trucks at the festival.  

No Electronic Recycling Drop-off This Weekend

Due to construction happening in the Public Works Storage Yard, there will not be an electronic recycling drop-off event this Saturday. However, the SCARCE Green Fair at the DuPage County Fairgrounds will collect electronics and much more on Sept. 15.


Library Hosting “Voting 101”

The League of Women Voters of Wheaton will cover the basics of voting, including registration, early and absentee voting, polling locations, and the importance of voting during Voting 101, which will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10 at the Wheaton Public Library.  Registration required at wheatonlibrary.org/calendar or call 630-868-7520.
