Gary Avenue Improvement Project Update

Crews are making significant progress on the Gary Avenue Improvement Project. Crews are working on widening the bridge over the creek near Prairie Avenue and Gary Avenue to accommodate a multi-use path, making it safer and easier to bike or walk. At the same time, crews are reconstructing the north half of Gary Avenue.

In the coming months, the different segments of this project will come together to form a wider road with a turn lane, stoplight, and crosswalk at Prairie Avenue. We continue to anticipate this project will be completed in November.

Hear from the City's Engineering Department in this video to learn more about the current progress.

On Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, the City of Wheaton and the Wheaton Park District invite the community to attend Wheaton’s annual September 11 Remembrance Ceremony in the Memorial Park bandshell, 225 Karlskoga Ave. Starting at 10 a.m., this ceremony will honor the individuals our community lost in the September 11 attacks and the military conflicts that followed. It also will honor all those who serve to protect our community, including the Wheaton Police and Fire Departments and all military personnel.

Ceremony participants will include Wheaton Mayor Philip Suess; the Wheaton Police and Fire Departments and Honor Guard; local musicians and community leaders. We look forward to joining together as a community to remember all those we lost and to honor those who dedicate their lives to protecting our community and our nation.

Watering Restrictions End Sept. 15

Lawn watering restrictions will end Sept. 15. Until then, residents can water on odd- or even-numbered days corresponding with odd- or even-numbered addresses. Watering is prohibited between noon and 6 p.m.

As a reminder, evaporation is highest during the hottest times of the day, reducing water absorption by plants and soil. Residents can continue to help water conservation efforts by avoiding watering during peak heat.
