DuPage County Resurfacing Work Underway on Gary Avenue

Crews for the DuPage County Department of Transportation have begun working to resurface Gary Avenue between Jewell Road and North Avenue, which is controlled by DuPage County. Crews are grinding down the existing pavement in preparation for placing a new layer of pavement.

While this road remains open, drivers in this area will experience delays due to lane closures and shifts in traffic patterns while DuPage County crews are working. Drivers may want to choose an alternate route. For more information about DuPage County’s projects, visit the DuPage County website.

Weather Siren

Northwest Wheaton Outdoor Weather Siren Being Replaced

The City of Wheaton is working to replace the outdoor weather siren on Morse Street in northwest Wheaton (near Wheaton North High School) after recent high winds from a storm damaged the siren. We anticipate this repair to be completed in the next few weeks.

As a reminder, outdoor weather sirens are intended to notify people who are outdoors that dangerous weather is approaching and they should seek shelter immediately. The City recommends all residents have multiple ways to receive emergency weather alerts, such as through cell phones, local TV/radio news stations, or weather radios. Outdoor weather sirens – while you may hear them from indoors – should not be your primary source for notifying you when severe weather is imminent.

First 2025 Human Case of West Nile Virus Reported in DuPage County

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) recently reported the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in DuPage County this year in a resident of Glen Ellyn.

WNV is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Individuals can take the following steps to protect themselves against WNV:

  • If outdoors when mosquitoes are active, dress in light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, long pants and socks.
  • Use mosquito repellent, in accordance with label directions.
  • Empty outdoor containers that collect standing water, such as wading pools and birdbaths.
  • Keep grass cut short and shrubbery well-trimmed.
  • Report neglected pools to Clarke: 1-800-942-2555.
  • Report dead birds on your property to the DCHD by using the online Citizen Reporter tool.

Visit the DCHD's website for more information.

Walk Your Wheels Logo

Reminder to Walk Your Wheels

Summer is in full swing, and there is even more pedestrian and bicycle traffic — especially in downtown Wheaton. To help keep everyone safe, the City of Wheaton does not allow you to ride bicycles, skateboards, scooters, in-line skates or roller skates on the sidewalks within the heart of the downtown. This also applies to electric bikes and electric scooters.

While you can still ride bikes on the streets, if you choose to go on the sidewalk, you must "walk your wheels" within the boundaries of the following streets: Wesley Street to the north; Cross Street to the east; Willow Street to the south; and West Street to the west. For more information, visit the City's website.

Musicians

Wheaton Municipal Band Concert Tomorrow

The Wheaton Municipal Band will perform Thursday, July 31, 7:30 p.m., at Memorial Park, 225 Karlskoga Ave. This free concert will feature guest conductor Alfred Watkins, co-founder and conductor of the acclaimed Cobb Wind Symphony.

At this concert, the Wheaton Lions Club will be collecting food donations and other items needed by the People's Resource Center (PRC) for distribution to anyone in need. Drop off items such as non-perishable food, personal care products, cleaning supplies, and diapers at the Wheaton Lions Club's truck parked on Wheaton Avenue. For a full list of needed items, visit the PRC’s website.

ComEd to Perform Tree Trimming in Select Areas

Within the next three months, ComEd will trim trees, branches, and vines that interfere or have the potential to interfere with power lines. This work helps prevent safety hazards and power outages.

The work area includes several street segments in northwest Wheaton near the City's border with Carol Stream.

Residents who are in affected areas will receive a notice from ComEd regarding this work. You can also view a map of impacted areas in Wheaton by visiting the City's website.

In some cases, tree removal may be required. The remaining tree stumps are treated with an approved herbicide to prevent future regrowth. Herbicide will be applied by state-licensed applicators. All work is performed by trained, qualified arborists.

For more information, visit www.ComEd.com/Trees or call 1-800-Edison-1 (1-800-334-7661).
