Downtown Parking Changes Now in Effect

Crews have completed installing timed parking signs throughout the downtown in customer parking areas, and a new program to expand downtown employee parking has started as of July 1. These changes to downtown parking are designed to meet the needs of both customers and employees by keeping parking spaces closest to downtown businesses available for customers, while providing additional parking options for downtown employees.

What’s New?

  • Customer Parking: A 3-hour time limit is now in effect for all areas designated “customer parking,” effective Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please note these time limits do not apply after 6 p.m. weekdays, any time on weekends, or on holidays. You will now see 3-hour customer parking signs installed in the central part of downtown, with 4-hour parking signs installed near the perimeter of downtown.
  • Employee Parking: In conjunction with timed customer parking, the City has implemented the new Blue Dot Parking Program to increase available parking options for downtown employees. This program allows employees with Blue Dot parking permits to park beyond posted time limits in any areas with Blue Dot signs.
  • Wheaton Place Garage, Fourth Floor: The top floor of the Wheaton Place Garage is all daily fee parking, weekdays from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., payable through the Passport app. After 3 p.m. weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday, these spaces are free and available to customers.

For more information and maps of available parking areas, visit the Downtown Parking section of the City’s website.

Gary Avenue Project Update: Two-Way Traffic Reopened Between Prairie Avenue and Jewell Road

There are two changes related to the Gary Avenue Improvement Project including opening temporary lanes to improve traffic flow and a traffic change to access Rosie O Reilly's.

  • The City has shifted Gary Avenue traffic between Prairie Avenue and Jewell Road to newly complete temporary lanes, which now allow for two-way traffic to resume on this portion of Gary Avenue. Previously, this segment was reduced to one lane using flaggers to alternate traffic while crews were working to reconstruct Gary Avenue. The newly created lanes allow crews to continue working and decrease delays in this area.
  • In addition, a second crew has started working to reconstruct the roadway at the south end of the project area. To accomplish this work, access to Rosie O Reilly's is now available from north of the business, instead of from Harrison Avenue south of the business. To access Rosie O Reilly's, drivers should approach the business from Gary Avenue north of the business and use the temporary access drive.

The next steps for this project will be to complete reconstructing and widening the road north and south of the bridge and reconstructing the bridge. All work is anticipated to be completed by November, barring unforeseen circumstances.

Please use caution when driving in the work zone. Thank you for your patience as the City works to make important traffic and pedestrian improvements in this area, including reconstructing the roadway; expanding the culvert; adding a turn lane, stoplight and marked crosswalk at Prairie Avenue; and adding a path for pedestrians. For more information about this project, visit the City's website at www.wheaton.il.us/GaryAvenue.
