First Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus in DuPage County

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) has confirmed the first mosquito batches to test positive for West Nile virus (WNV) this year in DuPage County. This year, there have been no reported human cases of WNV in DuPage County to date. However, the identification of positive mosquito pools is associated with an increased risk of WNV in people.

County health officials encourage residents to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites and the risk of contracting WNV. Practice the “3 R’s” to protect against mosquitoes:

  • Reduce the number of mosquitoes by removing containers outside that hold water.
  • Repel mosquitoes by using insect repellent.
  • Report stagnant water or other concerns regarding WNV through the DCHD website.

Walk Your Wheels Logo

"Walk Your Wheels" in Downtown Wheaton

Now that summer is here, there is even more pedestrian and bicycle traffic — especially in downtown Wheaton. To help keep everyone safe, the City of Wheaton does not allow you to ride bicycles, skateboards, scooters, in-line skates or roller skates on the sidewalks within the heart of the downtown. This also applies to electric bikes and electric scooters.

While you can still ride bikes on the streets, if you choose to go on the sidewalk, you must "walk your wheels" within the boundaries of the following streets: Wesley Street to the north; Cross Street to the east; Willow Street to the south; and West Street to the west. For more information, visit the City's website.
