Trick-or-treating

Trick-or-Treating Safety & Hours

As a reminder, the trick-or-treating hours in Wheaton are 3:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

To promote safety and protect children, the Wheaton Police Department offers the following tips:

  • Trick-or-treat on one side of the street at a time. Refrain from crossing the street in the middle of the block or between parked cars.
  • Trick-or-treat while it is light outside. If you must be out after dark, wear light-colored clothing, put reflective tape on your costume and treat bag, and carry a flashlight.
  • Trick-or-treat with friends and stay in a group.
  • An adult or responsible teen should accompany younger children at all times.
  • Advise children not to enter any residence or vehicle for the promise of anything.
  • Be courteous and respectful of others’ property.

For more safety tips, visit the City's website. The City encourages all residents to celebrate safely and wishes everyone a happy Halloween.

Coyote

Information on What to Do if You Encounter a Coyote

Coyotes are highly adaptable animals that can thrive in almost any setting, including residential areas. The City of Wheaton has recently received an increased number of reports of coyote sightings.

If you encounter a coyote, acting aggressively helps re-instill a fear of humans in coyotes. This technique, called "hazing," teaches coyotes that they are not welcome. You can:

  • Make eye contact and yell at the coyote(s)
  • Use a noisemaker or a whistle
  • Throw objects toward the coyote
  • Stomp your feet, clap your hands, or wave your arms
  • Run toward the coyote to scare it off
  • Act threatening
  • Spray a hose toward the coyote(s)

Hazing does not include weapons and does not physically harm coyotes. Be persistent and keep hazing until the coyote leaves. Because they may have become accustomed to humans, coyotes may not immediately leave, but following through is important for hazing to be effective. Anyone can call 9-1-1 if they observe any wild animal behaving in a threatening manner. Police officers will respond. You can also report a coyote sighting by visiting the City's website.
