Wheaton at Work: John BerringerAs a first grader at Madison Elementary School in 2001, John Berringer wanted to find a way to help the Wheaton community. He decided to raise money for stuffed animals to comfort children being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, providing comfort to kids like him during a scary time. He soon raised enough money and then presented the box of dogs, rabbits, and other critters to paramedics Nancy Lesko and Brian Schmidt at Fire Station 38, where he had the opportunity to sit in the back of an ambulance and meet some of Wheaton's firefighters. Today, John works as a member of the very same fire department as a paramedic. “I always had an interest in being a paramedic and it was always something that I wanted to do. After college I decided to apply to paramedic school, and I got accepted. I started working in Wheaton a year later. Working in the town I grew up in is rewarding because I have run into people on calls that I went to school with or knew from growing up, and them knowing me helps their comfort level during their emergency. I really enjoy being able to give back to the town I grew up in," said John. Thank you to John for his continued efforts and dedication to the City of Wheaton and our residents!
