Wheaton Firefighters Completed a Hazardous Materials Response Exercise

Wheaton firefighters recently completed a hazardous materials response exercise at the West Chicago Fire Protection District along with other members of the West Suburban Fire Rescue Alliance. In this exercise, firefighters practiced responding to a hazardous materials scenario, which involves first identifying the type of hazard released and its chemical properties. Based on this information, firefighters determine which level of protective gear is required, then practice donning the gear, entering the hazardous area, containing the hazard, and firefighter decontamination upon exiting the hazard.

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tips

The Wheaton Fire Department would like to remind you of safety tips related to lithium-ion batteries. Did you know? Lithium-ion batteries supply power to many kinds of devices including smart phones, laptops, e-bikes, smoke alarms, toys, and cars. If not used correctly, or if damaged, these batteries can catch on fire or explode. Key safety tips include:

  • Purchase devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Only use the battery that is designed for the device and put batteries in the device the right way.
  • Only use the charging cord that came with the device and do not charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or on a couch.
  • Do not keep charging the device or device battery after it is fully charged.
  • Keep batteries at room temperature when possible and store them away from anything that can catch fire.
