Officer Kaufman Receives the Life-Saving Award

These are the kinds of stories we like to share: On October 15, Wheaton Police Officer Kaufman was the first responder arriving to a Wheaton residence in response to a 9-1-1 call for a woman in full cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, Officer Kaufman identified that the woman was unconscious and had no pulse, and he immediately began administering chest compressions while instructing the victim's husband how to prepare an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for use. Each of Wheaton's Police Department squad cars are equipped with AED devices for situations like this. Officer Kaufman continued chest compressions until Wheaton Fire Department personnel arrived to continue care and deliver an AED shock to the victim. They were able to establish a pulse and breathing, and the victim was transported to Central DuPage Hospital to receive advanced care. The resident has returned home and is expected to make a full recovery! In recognition of Officer Kaufman's actions that directly contributed to saving this individual's life, Officer Kaufman received the Life-Saving Award. And, making the presentation of this award even better, Officer Kaufman was joined by the woman whose life he helped save and her husband, who thanked Officer Kaufman for his extraordinary efforts..

Kick Off the Holiday Season with Nights of Lights, Parade and Tree Lighting

Whether you’re looking to continue annual traditions or try something new, there’s something for everyone to kick off the holiday season starting on Friday, Nov. 25 in downtown Wheaton, brought to you by the Downtown Wheaton Association and the City of Wheaton.

Start with the return of the Nights of Lights in Adams Park, which will come to life with a park lighting at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 25. This year’s display will be more spectacular than ever, featuring a beautiful park entry display at Main Street and Wesley, more than 55,000 lights and a new animated light display at the fountain. You will be able to enjoy the lights each night from dusk to 10 p.m. throughout the holiday season.

Wheaton’s holidays wouldn’t be the same without the tradition of the Wheaton Christmas Parade. After enjoying the Nights of Lights, find a spot for the lighted parade, which steps off at 6 p.m. near Wheaton City Hall, travelling south on Wheaton Avenue and west on Front Street.

Once the parade is over, travel over to the new pavilion on Liberty Drive, where we’ll count down the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Marvel at a 22-foot lighted tree, enjoy music and more in the beautiful new pavilion near Liberty and Main Street. Activities will start at approximately 6:45 p.m. with the tree lighting at 7 p.m.

For more information on these events and more throughout the entire holiday season, visit the Downtown Wheaton Association’s website.

Fire Department Responds to Multi-Family Unit Structure Fire on Timber Trail

At approximately 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022, the Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1600 block of Timber Trail. Upon arrival, crews identified a fire at a multi-family townhome that affected multiple units.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. Occupants escaped the units safely and without injury. The cause of the fire continues to be investigated but does not appear to be suspicious in nature. Damage estimates are unavailable at this time. The City of Wheaton Building Department was called to the scene. The Wheaton Fire Department was also assisted on the scene by several fire departments from neighboring communities. The building was deemed uninhabitable at this time by the Building Department.
