Compost Your Pumpkins at Pumpkin Smash Nov. 5

The City of Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission will once again host a “Pumpkin Smash” drop-off. This collection will allow you to drop off pumpkins (please remove decorations first) to be composted, rather than going to the landfill. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon in the commuter parking lot at Liberty and Carlton.

Hale Street Being Reopened

With colder temperatures on their way, crews have taken down the Hale Street outdoor dining tents (on Hale Street between Front and Wesley streets) for the season. The City's Public Works Department is restriping and cleaning this block and will reopen the street for vehicle traffic this week.

Thank you to the Downtown Wheaton Association and our local restaurants for helping create another fantastic season of outdoor dining and entertainment in downtown Wheaton. You can look forward to the return of the tents in the spring of 2023.

French Market Hours Change

Wheaton's French Market will have different hours for the last few weeks of their 2022 season. You can visit the market between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. each Saturday through Nov. 26. The Wheaton French Market this year takes place on Liberty Drive between Cross and Reber Street, and on Reber Street between Liberty and Willow. Parking is available in the nearby Willow Avenue Parking Garage.

Repair Work This Week on Downtown Handicap Ramps

Contractors for the City are working to repair a limited number of downtown sidewalk handicap ramps this week. Crews are removing these select concrete squares and replacing them in the same day. This work is not expected to affect access to downtown businesses, and the majority of sidewalks will remain open throughout this work. This work will occur within the following street sections:

  • Wesley Street between Wheaton Avenue and Cross Street
  • Hale Street between Willow Avenue and Union Avenue
  • Front Street between West Street and Cross Street
  • Main Street between Front Street and Wesley Street
  • Southeast corner of Hale and Seminary

We appreciate your patience as crews complete this work.

Sidewalk Installation Delayed Due to Concrete Shortage

Due to a regional concrete shortage, the City needs to postpone the project to install new sidewalks from this fall to spring of 2023. We apologize for the delay and look forward to making this important safety improvement that will help make Wheaton a more pedestrian-friendly community. Residents who will have a sidewalk installed adjacent to their property have received notices about this work, and before construction begins in the spring of 2023, these residents will receive another notification with updates.
