Halloween Safety Tips and Trick-or-Treating Hours

The trick-or-treating hours in Wheaton will be 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. The Wheaton Police Department would like to share safety tips for the community to have a happy Halloween. For safety tips,
visit
https://www.wheaton.il.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=826. If your home will not be participating in trick-or-treating that night, please leave your porch light off and/or place a sign on your door that you’re not participating. The City’s website has a sign you can print out.

Leaf Collection and Storm Sewer Reminders

This fall, the City of Wheaton reminds you of the ways you can properly dispose of leaves. Place leaves in containers 35 gallons in size or smaller, or in biodegradable bags. Containers or bags must weigh less than 50 pounds when filled. Each container or bag requires an LRS yard waste/organics/excess garbage sticker, available at City Hall and at many local grocery and hardware stores.

When you’re cleaning up leaves, please be careful not to blow or rake them into the streets. Doing so can prevent storm sewers from functioning properly and can lead to flooding. If your house is located near a storm sewer catch basin, please help keep it clear by sweeping away leaves and debris from the sewer grate. Also, please note that burning leaves is not allowed. LRS will collect leaves and yard waste on your garbage day through the second full week of December.

If you have brush and tree trimmings, please remember to follow the requirements for collection. Although brush/tree trimmings do not need to be placed in bags or containers, you must place them in stacks that are no longer than 4 feet and no more than 18 inches in diameter. Each stack must have an LRS sticker attached and must weigh less than 50 pounds. Stacks can be bundled with twine or spaced apart so that crews can easily collect the stacks. We appreciate your cooperation to ensure LRS collection crews are able to efficiently and safely remove yard waste from the parkway.

The program ends in just five days! See the City's website for drop-off locations.

Pumpkin Smash

The City of Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission will once again host a “Pumpkin Smash” drop-off for pumpkins right after Halloween. This collection will allow you to drop off pumpkins (please remove decorations first) to be composted, rather than going to the landfill. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon in the commuter parking lot at Liberty and Carlton.

Online Form Now Available to Request Extraordinary Police Services

The Wheaton Police Department now offers a more convenient way for community groups, organizations and others to request police services for events and other occasions. Known as “extraordinary services,” groups can request to contract with the Wheaton Police Department for police services by submitting an online request. This can be for services such as traffic control & pedestrian safety, crowd control, or security during events, which are performed by Wheaton Police Officers outside of their normal working hours. Find out more and submit a request on the City's website.
