Rail Strike Would Affect Train Service in Wheaton

A potential strike by freight railroad workers would halt service on the Metra line that stops in Wheaton (Union Pacific West), because these railways are owned by Union Pacific. If the strike occurs, Metra is planning to suspend service on many lines after the Thursday evening rush hour. Please see Metra's update issued earlier today. If you plan to use Metra in the coming days, please follow Metra for updates.

Monarch City USA

Wheaton Named Monarch City USA

Monarchs are welcome here! The City of Wheaton was recently named a Monarch City USA in recognition of the actions our City takes to help monarch butterflies thrive. Nearly a billion monarch butterflies have vanished since 1990, but efforts like planting nectar plants and milkweed help promote their recovery. Some of the actions Wheaton has taken include incorporating native plant beds in our Downtown Streetscape Project, promoting Wheaton's annual Native Plant Sale to encourage residents to plant native species all over Wheaton, and reducing the use of herbicides.

Watering Restrictions End

Annual watering restrictions will conclude on Sept. 15. However, the City still encourages you to practice conservation techniques such as not watering your lawn during the hottest part of the day to avoid evaporation.

Be Alert for Ruse Burglaries

Last week, the Wheaton Police Department responded to a ruse burglary in which two men claiming to be spraying for insects stole approximately $5,000 from a residence during a ruse burglary. To help protect you from a similar incident, the Wheaton Police Department recommends that residents:

  • Ask workers for identification before letting them into your home or onto your property;
  • Be aware that burglars may wear reflective vests and carry clipboards in an attempt to look legitimate;
  • When in doubt, call the listed employer of the City of Wheaton to confirm the appointment;
  • Be wary of workers who say they are offering discounts in the area;
  • If you go outside with someone claiming to be a worker, lock your home while you are outside;
  • If you are suspicious of a person or you need help with verification, please call 911 for assistance.
