September 11 Remembrance Ceremony

Attend Wheaton’s September 11 Ceremony

Please join the City of Wheaton as we remember the individuals from Wheaton we lost on September 11 & in the military conflicts that followed, and lift up the first responders who sacrifice their safety every day. Wheaton’s annual September 11 Remembrance Ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 11 at Memorial Park.

Saturday’s Electronic Recycling Event Also Collecting Eyeglasses & Hearing Aids

In addition to the City’s monthly Electronic Recycling Collection, the Wheaton Lions Club will be collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids at the September Electronic Recycling Collection from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 10 at Wheaton’s Public Works Storage Yard, 820 W. Liberty Drive. Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission leads the monthly collection events, where you can drop off unwanted electronics, cooking oil, scrap metal, clothing & textiles and more. Please note there is a charge for recycling TVs and monitors. See the City’s website for full details.

Garbage/Yard Waste Holiday Schedule

As a reminder, all garbage/yard waste/recycling pickups for this week will be one day later than usual due to the Labor Day holiday.

Police Expand Online Options

The Wheaton Police Department recently added a convenient way for you to file non-emergency police reports. You can submit reports online for issues such as theft, private property vehicle crashes, vandalism, lost property or burglary to a vehicle. Visit the City’s website to see the types of reports you can file online and the City services you can request.

Roosevelt Road Corridor Implementation Discussion on Sept. 12

The City of Wheaton has adopted the Roosevelt Road Corridor Plan, which is a shared vision for future development along the Roosevelt Road Corridor that is responsive to existing conditions and emerging trends, and appropriate for our community.

At the September 12 City Council Planning Session, the City Council will discuss implementation strategies for amending the Zoning Ordinance. This is a public meeting, and interested residents can attend in person or via Zoom. The meeting agenda will be posted on the City's website in the Agenda Center under City Council Planning Sessions before the end of the day Friday, Sept. 9. The agenda will include the Zoom link for this meeting.

Redistricting Update

Election Redistricting Discussion Continues at Sept. 12 Planning Session

The City is in the process of redrawing the boundaries of its four Election Districts based on changes in population recorded by the 2020 U.S. Census. This process ensures residents are equally represented and that there are as close to an equal number of residents in each district as possible. You can see the two redistricting proposals on the City’s website, along with background information and the City Council’s guiding criteria. This site also includes an interactive map where you can see which district you would be located in under each proposal.

The next City Council discussion of these proposals will take place at the Sept. 12 City Council Planning Session, which takes place at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 at City Hall, 303 W. Wesley St. More information and a link to attend by Zoom are available on the City’s website.

Council Consideration of Car Wash Proposal Deferred to Future Meeting

The City Council’s consideration of Zoning Application #22-18 to construct a car wash at 311 E. Loop Road, the former Cozymel’s restaurant site, has been deferred to a future City Council Meeting. City staff has requested additional time to thoroughly review the application in light of area traffic before the City Council formally considers the special use permit application. We will send out a future update once the City determines the City Council meeting date at which it will be discussed.

This project was previously discussed at a Planning & Zoning Board public hearing and two Planning & Zoning Board meetings in August, and the next step will be for it to be presented to the City Council for formal consideration.

Quilts: Secret Codes to Freedom

The Wheaton Public Library invites the community to this hybrid program at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13. Learn how quilts were used by abolitionists and fugitive slaves to signify escape routes along the Underground Railroad. Connie Martin will use hand-crafted quilt replicas to recount the stories passed down to her, a sixth-generation descendant of captured African slaves. Registration required at wheatonlibrary.org/calendar

Bicyclist & Pedestrian Commission Leading History Bike Tour

Wheaton’s Bicyclist & Pedestrian Commission invites the community to take part in the Great Fires of Wheaton History Bike Tour of Wheaton. The event will begin from the Wheaton Public Library’s west side at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

The great fires that have shaped Wheaton have been researched and documented by Bob Goldsborough, longtime Wheaton resident and current writer for the Chicago Tribune. Bob will lead a leisurely 6-mile bicycle tour of the sites of these fires and provide historical commentary at each site.

The event is open to cyclists of all levels and ages. (Participants younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.) All riders must provide their own bicycle and wear a bike helmet. Participants must also sign a digital waiver prior to participation.

In case of inclement weather, participants with signed waivers will be notified of the ride cancelation by 1 p.m. on Sept. 17. The rain date is Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.
