Election Candidate Petitions Available Aug. 30

Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 30, petitions for candidacy for the 2023 Wheaton municipal election will be available in the Office of the City Clerk at Wheaton City Hall, 303 W. Wesley St. One position for Mayor and two positions for Councilman At-Large are up for election. Read about the requirements to be eligible and more information on the City’s website.

Nighttime Parking Restrictions in Place on Some Downtown Streets 

Overnight parking restrictions will be in place on some downtown streets from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 24-25, while crews restripe street pavement markings: 

  • Cross Street, from Front Street to Wesley Street 
  • Front Street, from West Street to Cross Street? 
  • Hale Street,?from Wesley Street to Union Avenue and?from Willow Avenue to Liberty Drive? 
  • Wesley Street, from Wheaton Avenue to Cross Street 

Please use caution if you are driving in the work area overnight. 

Police Department Honor Guard Training to Include Sound of Weapons Being Fired

To ensure the community is not alarmed if you hear what may sound like gunfire, please be aware that the Wheaton Police Department Honor Guard will be practicing between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, in the Wheaton Police Department parking lot at 900 W. Liberty Drive. Honor Guard members will be shooting “blanks” in the air during this time, which may sound like a series of gunfire. No live ammunition will be used.
 
The Honor Guard is comprised of Wheaton police officers and sergeants who represent the department at special events and honor fallen officers.

Detour Notice

Temporary Detour for One Block of Prairie Path

The block of the Illinois Prairie Path along Liberty Drive between Main Street and Hale Street is closed through the end of the day Friday while crews repair sidewalks. A detour directs pedestrians and bicyclists to use the south side of Liberty Drive. We ask that drivers in this area please be aware of this detour and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Temporary Intersection Closure of Dorchester Ave. & Childs St. for Wheaton Sanitary District Project

Crews for the Wheaton Sanitary District have closed the intersection of Dorchester and Childs Street to install a new sewer and relocate the water main. This intersection will reopen by the end of the day Friday, Aug. 26.
 
Drivers should use the posted detour route around this intersection, which will direct drivers to use Liberty and Woodlawn Street.
 
This work is part of the Wheaton Sanitary District’s Northside Interceptor Project, a multi-year project to replace sewer pipes in the area. The Wheaton Sanitary District is a separate entity from the City of Wheaton. For more updates on this project, please see the Wheaton Sanitary District’s website. 

Cop on a Rooftop

Thank You!

The Wheaton Police Department thanks the community for donating more than $5,200 for Special Olympics Illinois through Cop on a Rooftop! On Aug. 19, members of Wheaton Metropolitan Association of Police (MAP) #699 volunteered their time at the Dunkin’ at 956 E. Roosevelt Road to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois. Online donations are still being accepted for anyone who would like to participate. 

Shakespeare in the Park Begins Tomorrow

The Wheaton Park District and Wheaton College Arena Theater will present three performances of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in Memorial Park on Aug. 25, 26 and 27. This event is free to attend. More information is on the Wheaton Park District's website.


Rolling Road Closures for Wheaton North Marching Band Event

Between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, several roads will be briefly closed for the Wheaton North Marching Band’s March-a-thon, where they will be traveling from the Central Athletic Complex on Naperville Road to Wheaton North High School. See a map of the route on the City’s website.


Final Neighborhood Roll Call is Aug. 30

The Wheaton Police Department will hold its final Neighborhood Roll Call of the season at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 at Briar Patch Park. The Wheaton Police Department has been hosting community engagement events aimed at connecting with residents and sharing information. This year, many of these events included the partnership of Community Unit School District 200, and we appreciate their participation in these events. Register for Sept. 12 ALICE Training with Wheaton Police Department

The Wheaton Police Department invites the community to register for ALICE Training (Alert-Lockdown-Inform-Counter-Evacuate), which helps teach individuals and groups how to proactively handle the threat in a violent encounter or active shooter event. This training will take place from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12 at Wheaton Public Library, 225 N. Cross St. Registration is through the Wheaton Public Library.


Front Street Detour Postponed

The detour associated with Front Street reconstruction work has been postponed and is estimated to begin in September. We apologize for the inconvenience. More information will be posted before this work begins.


Seminar Aims to Keep Seniors Safe from Scams

DuPage County and the DuPage County State’s Attorney, DuPage County Recorder, DuPage County Sheriff, and DuPage County Treasurer will host Safe from Scams: Protecting Seniors and Their Assets from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 2 in the first floor Auditorium of the JTK Administration Building, 421. N County Farm Road, Wheaton. The free informational session for senior citizens, caregivers, and family members will provide information on avoiding scams and fraud aimed at senior citizens and the elderly. 
 

Registration Open for Great Fires of Wheaton History Bike Tour

Starting from the west side of the Wheaton Public Library, join the Wheaton Bicyclist and Pedestrian Commission for The Great Fires of Wheaton History Bike Tour of Wheaton on Sept. 17. The great fires that have shaped Wheaton have been researched and documented by Bob Goldsborough, longtime Wheaton resident and current writer for the Chicago Tribune. Bob will lead a leisurely 6-mile bicycle tour of the sites of these fires and provide historical commentary at each site.
