Slow Down

Welcome Back, Students!
Drivers: SLOW DOWN!

Many Wheaton students returned to school today for the start of the new year. All drivers need to be aware that School Zone speed limits are in effect when students are present.

The Wheaton Police Department will have extra officers in School Zones this week to help remind and educate drivers about the reduced speeds. Please do your part to help students have a safe start to the school year by SLOWING DOWN and watching for pedestrians.

Asphalt treatment

Crews Applying Asphalt Surface Treatment

Crews contracted by the City are out applying a surface treatment to prolong the life of Wheaton’s asphalt roadways in some areas now through Monday.
The tentative schedule is available on the City's website.

While all streets in the work areas will remain open, we ask that residents in the affected areas do not park on the street between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., until crews apply the product. Once crews have applied the treatment, we recommend not returning your car onto the driveway in the 1-2 hours after it is applied to your street to avoid tracking the surface treatment onto your driveway.

The contractor will be providing notices to affected areas the day before work is to begin. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to prolong the life of Wheaton’s roads.

Police Investigate Suspicious Item Outside School

Earlier today, Wheaton North High School was briefly placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure while the Wheaton Police Department investigated a suspicious item located outside the school. The item appeared to be a pried-open lockbox that could potentially be used as a gun safe. There was no threat to students or staff, and this action was taken out of an abundance of caution. Several other schools were briefly placed in a “Secure and Teach” as well, out of an abundance of caution.

The Wheaton Police Department and School District 200 work together closely to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and the entire community. Both the District and Wheaton Police encourage everyone to always say something if they see something that doesn’t seem right or safe. In this situation, members of the school community modeled that behavior and properly executed safety drills as they have trained.

Portion of Wesley Changing to Two-Way Traffic during Front Street Reconstruction

Starting the week of Aug. 22, crews contracted by the City will begin working to reconstruct Front Street from West Street to Gary Avenue. Because this project includes replacing sanitary sewer pipes, manholes and reconstructing the street, the City will be rerouting traffic in phases.

Phase 1 includes a one-day detour for southbound West Street traffic around the intersection of Front Street and West Street while crews replace the sanitary sewer manhole.

Phase 2 will require closing Front Street between West Street and Gary. The detour route for Front Street traffic will temporarily make Wesley Street into a two-way traffic pattern between West Street and the Manchester/Wesley Street bridge over the railroad tracks. Eastbound traffic over the bridge will be required to travel eastbound on Wesley Street instead of Front Street while this work is being completed. See the map of this detour.

The contractor will maintain local access for residents who live in the project area throughout this work. The City anticipates this work will take approximately 3 weeks to complete.

Throughout this project, on-street parking will not be allowed on the block of Front Street between West Street and Gary Avenue. Drivers who use these paid parking spots should use some of the City’s other daily fee parking options, such as in Lot 9. Daily fee parking options are listed on the City’s website.
