Pilot Program Improving Sidewalks through Saw Cutting This week, the City of Wheaton is starting a pilot program to improve the City’s sidewalks and make them more ADA-compliant through saw cutting uneven squares. The City is using this process to remove sidewalk faults that are between ½” and 1 ½," which will reduce the potential for tripping and make sidewalks more accessible for all. Compared with replacing entire sidewalk squares, saw cutting is a more efficient, less expensive solution. The City has contracted with Hard Rock Concrete Cutters, Inc. to work on City sidewalks that are south of Roosevelt Road on the west side of Wheaton. Work will occur between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the City anticipates this work will last approximately 2 weeks. The City's annual Sidewalk Replacement Program will continue addressing severe sidewalk defects, such as sidewalk squares that are raised 1 ½" and greater.

Portion of Wesley Changing to Two-Way Traffic during Front Street ReconstructionStarting the week of Aug. 21, 2022, crews contracted by the City will begin working to reconstruct Front Street from West Street to Gary Avenue. Because this project includes replacing sanitary sewer pipes, manholes and reconstructing the street, the City will be rerouting traffic in phases.
Phase 1 includes a one-day detour around the intersection of Front Street and West Street while crews replace the sanitary sewer manhole. The detour for southbound West Street traffic will be: - East (left) on Front Street
- South (right) on Wheaton Avenue, and
- West (right) on Liberty Drive.
Northbound West Street traffic will not be affected. This detour is expected to only be necessary for one day while sewer work in the intersection is completed. See the map of this detour.
Phase 2 will require closing Front Street between West Street and Gary. The detour route for Front Street traffic will temporarily make Wesley Street into a two-way traffic pattern between West Street and the Manchester/Wesley Street bridge over the railroad tracks. Eastbound traffic over the bridge will be required to travel eastbound on Wesley Street instead of Front Street while this work is being completed. See the map of this detour.
The contractor will maintain local access for residents who live in the project area throughout this work. The City anticipates this work will take approximately 3 weeks to complete.
Throughout this project, on-street parking will not be allowed on the block of Front Street between West Street and Gary Avenue. Drivers who use these paid parking spots should use some of the City’s other daily fee parking options, such as in Lot 9. Daily fee parking options are listed on the City’s website.
