Celebrate Independence Day in Wheaton

Join in celebrating Independence Day with the Field of Honor, fireworks and Wheaton’s annual parade!

June 29-July 4: Wheaton Field of Honor

The Wheaton Park District and VFW Post 8081 will be hosting the Wheaton Field of Honor, a display of 2,000 American flags, June 29-July 4 in Seven Gables Park. The event is a tribute to honor individuals serving in active-duty military, fallen servicemen & servicewomen, first responders, veterans and hometown heroes. Tonight there will be bagpipes at 7 p.m. followed at 7:30 p.m. by Chicago Blackhawks National Anthem Singer Jim Cornelison, patriotic music, DuPage Honor Guard and Taps. Performances are also scheduled for June 30. See the Wheaton Park District’s website for more information.

July 3: Fireworks

Activities and fireworks will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 3 at Graf Park, 1855 Manchester Road, with fireworks at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.). This event will include carnival rides, a DJ, concessions and lawn games.

July 4: Fourth of July Parade

Celebrate with Wheaton’s annual parade at 10 a.m. Monday, July 4, organized by the Wheaton Park District. The parade route is: 

  • Beginning at Main Street and Hawthorne Boulevard
  • south on Main Street
  • west onto Union Avenue
  • south on Wheaton Avenue
  • east on Front Street
  • concluding at Cross Street.

Please note these street closures in the vicinity of the parade route. There will also be “no parking” signs posted on the following streets starting July 1 that will be in effect from 9 p.m. July 3 through noon July 4:

  • Union Avenue - both sides of streets between Wheaton Avenue and Main Street;
  • Wheaton Avenue - both sides of streets between Union Avenue and Front Street;
  • Front Street - both sides of streets between Wheaton Avenue and Cross Street.

City Offices Closed; Garbage Schedule Affected by Holiday

Non-emergency City of Wheaton offices will be closed on Monday, July 4. In addition, LRS will not pick up garbage/recycling/yard waste on Monday, so all pickups will be delayed by one day the week of July 4.

Last Call to Apply for Citizens Police Academy

If you’re interested in a hands-on experience to learn about the inner workings of police operations and practices, apply for the Citizens Police Academy by June 30. This 10-week series with the Wheaton Police Department will be on Tuesday evenings, Sept. 6 through Nov. 8. Find out more and apply on the City’s website.

Wheaton Municipal Band Features Patriotic Music at June 30 Concert

The Wheaton Municipal Band will perform its annual patriotic concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30 in Memorial Park. This concert is free to attend and will feature the WMB Saxophone Quartet. For more information, see the Wheaton Municipal Band’s website.

Next Neighborhood Roll Call at Madison School

Neighbors near Madison School, it’s your turn for a Neighborhood Roll Call with Wheaton Police and District 200! The next event will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 5 at Madison School. Please attend to find out what’s happening in your area, learn important safety information and hear how District 200 and Wheaton Police are working together to keep our school communities safe. National Gathering of American Indian Veterans

Council Recognizes 8th Annual National Gathering of American Indian Veterans

At a recent City Council meeting, the Council recognized the 8th annual National Gathering of American Indian Veterans, which will take place July 15-17 at Cantigny Park. This event honors all veterans and military personnel of all cultures, eras and branches in a Native Way that is open to all. Representatives from the Trickster Cultural Center welcomed everyone in the community to take part in this three-day event focusing on community healing that includes dance, music, workshops and presentations. School Board Seeks Applicants for Vacancy

If you’re looking for an opportunity to get involved in your community, the District 200 Board of Education is seeking residents who would like to be considered for appointment to fill a vacancy on the seven-member board. The board will appoint an individual to fill the remainder of the term through the Consolidated Election in April 2023. Applications are due by 4 p.m. July 7.
