Wheaton Celebrates Preservation Month

The City of Wheaton along with the Wheaton Historic Commission is excited to celebrate Preservation Month with tours and activities taking place throughout May. Residents can tour Wheaton and learn more about the designated Wheaton Historic Landmarks by seeking out purple lawn signs that will be in place from May 14 to May 22. A virtual tour of historic sites throughout the City can also be taken on the City of Wheaton’s website with a new interactive map. An architectural walking tour, a presentation on the history of the Aurora Elgin Railway and a discussion of past fires that have affected Wheaton will also be taking place in May. Emerson Elem celebrate Arbor Day

Emerson Elementary Celebrates Arbor Day

Emerson Elementary was the recipient for this year’s Arbor Day tree in conjunction with the Environmental Commission and the City of Wheaton. Watch this video to see students present different poems and art projects that express the importance of celebrating Arbor Day and the impact that trees have on the City of Wheaton. A flag was also presented from the City of Wheaton to Emerson Elementary in celebration of the City being named a Tree City USA for the 36th year in a row.

Hale Street Tents Return This Weekend

The City and the Downtown Wheaton Association are pleased to welcome back the outdoor dining tents on Hale Street beginning Saturday, May 7. The City authorized the Downtown Wheaton Association to use the block of Hale Street between Front Street and Wesley Street for large outdoor dining tents that are shared by the surrounding restaurants. Not only are local restaurants able to provide more space for dining, but it also provides an opportunity for open-air dining in a lively atmosphere. The tents will be set up from the beginning of May through October and will host entertainment on weekend nights. Go Fly a Kite Event at Graf Park on Saturday

The Wheaton Park District is hosting Go Fly a Kite at Graf Park on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Whether you are an avid kite flyer or new to the activity, all are welcome to watch kite-flying demonstrations and participate in flying your own kite as well. Kites will be available for purchase during the event. Flash Tacos will also be at Graf Park for attendees to purchase breakfast tacos, burritos and other menu items. Registration is not required for this event and is free of charge.

Citizen's Police Academy

Citizen’s Police Academy Now Accepting Applications

The Wheaton Police Department is now accepting applications through June 30 for a 10-week Citizen’s Police Academy. This academy provides community members a chance to learn the inner workings of police practices, operations and objectives. The academy will consist of classroom instruction, interactive discussions and hands-on practical exercises focusing on various aspects of police work. Individuals must be at least 21 years old and live or work in the City of Wheaton. The classes are free and will be held at the Wheaton Police Department and other nearby locations. Applications are due by June 30, 2022 and can be submitted through the City’s website or mailed to the Wheaton Police Department. Bike Rodeo

Bicycle Rodeo Promotes Safe Bike Riding

The Wheaton Bicycle Advisory Commission and the Wheaton Police Department encourage children age 13 and younger to attend a free Bicycle Safety Rodeo on Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Wheaton City Hall Parking Lot. This event includes stations where young bicyclists will learn various safety techniques and maneuvers. Giveaways will also be distributed at the end of the event. Please register for the event by filling out the online waiver. Children must be accompanied by an adult guardian/parent, bring a working bicycle, and wear a helmet. If needed, the rain date for this event will be May 21.

City Council Hosting Coffee With Council

The City Council will host Coffee with Council on May 7 at 10 a.m. in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall at 303 W. Wesley Street. Residents can come and ask questions to the Council and discuss what’s happening.

Road Closures Occuring May 7

The Wiesbrook School Tiger Trot Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The following streets will be temporarily closed due to the event:

  • Durfee Road, Between Wiesbrook Road & Orchard Road
  • Tomahawk Drive: Entire Tomahawk Drive
  • Arrowhead Drive, Between Butterfield Road & Durfee Road
  • Menomini Drive, Between Arrowhead Drive & Seneca Drive
  • Seneca Drive, Between Legends Drive & Durfee Road
  • Burning Trail, Between Durfee Road & Embden Lane
  • Embden Lane, Between Burning Trail & Seneca Drive
  • Legends Drive, Between Butterfield & Seneca Drive
  • Mitchell Circle, Entire Mitchell Circle
  • Big Horn, Between Durfee Road & Wenona Lane
  • Wenona Lane, Between Big Horn and Apache Drive
  • Entire Townpath Court

Please do not move the barricades to ensure the safety of the runners. Some temporary traffic delays may occur.

Some Spaces in Parking Garages Unavailable During Repairs 

Crews will begin making repairs and painting the interior of the City’s Wheaton Place Parking Garage (232 W. Wesley St.) and Willow Avenue Parking Garage (220 S. Cross St.) starting the week of May 9. Some parking spaces within the garages will be unavailable, but the remainder of the garages will remain open. We appreciate your patience as we complete this maintenance.

Hydrant Flushing Starts Week of May 9

The City’s Water Division will begin hydrant flushing the week of May 9. This project will continue for several weeks. Water discoloration may occur during or immediately after the flushing. It is best not to draw large amounts of water if water discoloration occurs. Residents may call 630-260-2090 with any questions.
