Polar Plunge

Wheaton Police Department Participating in Polar Plunge

Team Frosted Donuts is hungry for more! Following a successful Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Illinois in 2021, the Wheaton Police Department’s Team Frosted Donuts is back for another epic Polar Plunge. The team has its sights set on topping last year's $27,000 raised to assist Special Olympics programs, and the community is invited to help.

This event is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Illinois, which supports athletic programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. More than 23,100 traditional Special Olympics athletes and 13,000 Young Athletes participate in Special Olympics Illinois programs.

Like last year, Special Olympics Illinois is encouraging teams to organize their own events. The Wheaton Police Department team will be gathering and plunging into a large, icy water-filled pool. If you’d like to learn more about the team or lend your support, you can visit the team site and click on “Roster” for each member’s story and page. More information is also posted on the City's website.

Wheaton Sanitary District Northside Interceptor Sewer Replacement Project Update

The Wheaton Sanitary District (a separate entity from the City of Wheaton) continues making progress on its project to replace underground sewer pipes in some sections of Wheaton. Throughout this project, which began in May 2021, the Wheaton Sanitary Project has been providing notices to affected residents in the project area as it works to replace approximately 5 miles of sewer pipe originally installed between 1926 and 1962.

The next segment of work will begin from Roosevelt Road and Hazelton Avenue to Childs Street and will head east. Construction then will go north on Woodlawn Street, east on Liberty Drive, and north on Knollwood Drive. At that point, it will go northeast on Manchester Road and under the railroad tracks. The pipe installation is expected to continue from now until the end of 2022. You can find updates regarding the project on the Wheaton Sanitary District’s website at http://www.wsd.dst.il.us/About-WSD/News/.

Parkway tree

Shared Cost Parkway Tree Program Applications Accepted through March 1

The Forestry Division will accept applications for its Shared Cost Tree Program now through March 1. This program promotes tree planting in Wheaton by splitting the cost between the City and property owner to have a tree planted in the parkway, which is typically the area between the curb and the sidewalk (if a property has curb and/or sidewalk). Residents can choose from a variety of trees varying in height and size at a cost of $95 per tree. For more information or to complete an application, visit the City’s website.

City to Review Memorial Park Activities at Meeting

As part of the City’s and the Park District’s shared goal of ensuring that the newly renovated Memorial Park Bandshell provides an entertainment and performing arts venue for the community to enjoy while respecting the surrounding area, the City will be reviewing the past year’s activities during a discussion with the Wheaton Park District during the Wheaton City Council’s Planning Session at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28 at Wheaton City Hall, 303 W. Wesley St. Remote participation will be available through Zoom for those who would like to attend virtually.

You can read more and share input ahead of the meeting at www.wheaton.il.us/memorialpark. The discussion is part of the special use permit for the new bandshell, which requires a meeting after a year of operations to determine if any fine-tuning is needed. We commend the Park District on its first year of events in the beautifully renovated Memorial Park and look forward to what the Park District will bring to the community for 2022.
