Coyote

Coyote Sightings Can Increase During Mating Season

The City has received reports of coyote sightings in Wheaton, which are typical this time of year, during mating season for coyotes. As a reminder, please ensure you are not providing coyotes with a food source, such as pet food left outdoors, easy access to garbage, or food for other wildlife. If you encounter a coyote, you can take actions to scare it away, such as making loud noises, throwing something in the direction of the coyote or running toward it and yelling. You should not do anything to physically harm a coyote.

In addition, you can protect pets by doing the following:

  • Keep small pets (cats, rabbits, small dogs) indoors. Don’t allow them to run free at any time. They are easy prey.
  • Use a short leash when walking your pet. Never let a coyote get between you and your pet.
  • Dogs should be brought inside after dark and never allowed to run loose. This is especially important during mating season, which is February through April.
  • Fences do not guarantee your pet’s safety. Always attend to small pets outdoors.

City to Review Memorial Park Activities at Meeting

As part of the City’s and the Park District’s shared goal of ensuring that the newly renovated Memorial Park Bandshell provides an entertainment and performing arts venue for the community to enjoy while respecting the surrounding area, the City will be reviewing the past year’s activities during a discussion with the Wheaton Park District during the Wheaton City Council’s Planning Session at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28 at Wheaton City Hall, 303 W. Wesley St. Remote participation will be available through Zoom for those who would like to attend virtually.

You can read more and share input ahead of the meeting at www.wheaton.il.us/memorialpark. The discussion is part of the special use permit for the new bandshell, which requires a meeting after a year of operations to determine if any fine-tuning is needed. We commend the Park District on its first year of events in the beautifully renovated Memorial Park and look forward to what the Park District will bring to the community for 2022.
