Detour Begins Aug. 9 for Part of Prairie Path in Downtown

Newsflash_Road Detour

Starting Monday, Aug. 9, 2021, a portion of the Illinois Prairie Path in downtown Wheaton will be closed while crews complete work associated with the Downtown Streetscape Project. The path will be closed between West Street and Reber Street, and the detour will use the following route (See a map of the detour route):

Illinois Prairie Path going east:

  • South on West Street
  • East (left) on Willow Avenue
  • North (left) on Reber Street to the Illinois Prairie Path

Illinois Prairie Path going west:

  • South on Reber Street
  • West (right) on Willow Avenue
  • North (right) on West Street to the Illinois Prairie Path

Those who are running/walking on the path may use the sidewalks on the detour route. Bicyclists should either ride on the street for the detour route, or walk their bicycles on the sidewalk starting on Willow Avenue. The City prohibits biking on the sidewalks in the downtown area

We ask motorists to please use extra caution and look for bicyclists and pedestrians in this area.

The Downtown Streetscape Project will be improving the Illinois Prairie Path in this section to better align with the improvements happening in this area. This detour is expected to be in place for several months while a portion of the current path here is removed and replaced. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your cooperation in safely rerouting yourself around this work area.
